01 / HOW IT HELPS
Start with what it may help you do
What it can help with
Asking a general coding agent to review a large change can miss files, drift from the correct lines, or produce too much noise. Open Code Review first reads the Git diff and relevant context, then produces rule-guided, line-level findings that can be viewed locally or used in GitHub and GitLab review workflows.
Who may find it useful
Developers and teams already using Git and pull requests who want diff review, full-file scans, or delegated review as a repeatable step. It does not replace human review, security scanning, tests, or CI; for private code, first confirm exactly what the chosen model provider receives.
Current availability
An open-source project or live demo is available. Full use may still require installation or configuration.
A low-risk first try
Use a small repository with no secrets or client code and preview only which files and rules the current diff would include. Pin the installed version first, without CI or a model key. Once the scope looks right, review one reversible change locally and check every line reference and suggestion.
02 / BEFORE YOU USE IT
Know these limits before you start
Review content and related code context are sent to the model service you configure; use a local or private endpoint you have verified if code must not leave your environment. Sessions are stored locally. The npm launcher may auto-update by default, so pin a version or disable updates, and inspect the remote installer before running it. Current repository telemetry docs say telemetry is off by default and prompt or response content is not exported, while the npm page still contains older content_logging wording; follow the docs and code for the version you install. The benchmark is first-party and shows lower recall, and CI adoption still requires reviewing token permissions, secret scope, and requests from forks.
Compared with other options
Compared with typing “review this” into a general coding agent, it adds deterministic file selection, project rules, and comment placement for repeatable use. The tradeoff is installation, model and secret configuration, and CI permission maintenance. Compared with human review and static analysis, it can add semantic clues, but its findings remain probabilistic.
