OpenAI report: cross-role tasks are becoming part of daily work
In a sample of about 6,200 employees, the share of cross-role ChatGPT tasks rose from 13.1% in April to 25.9% in July. Client discussions and advertising copy were among the writing tasks used repeatedly.
Correction: the earlier recommendation to redesign jobs based on repeat use has been withdrawn. The report describes task use, not the effects of job redesign.
How the report counts
The window runs April through July 2026 and covers roughly 6,200 employees and over 1.5 million work-related ChatGPT conversations. Tasks are clustered by occupation; the report then measures how much AI activity lands outside the person's own role.
That share rose from 13.1% in April to 25.9% in July. Recurrence is the sharper signal: a cross-role task done one month reappeared the next at a 23.6% rate, against 8.4% for comparable employees who had not done it — this is not one-off experimentation.
Which tasks stick
Retention is highest for client discussions (54%), ad copy (44%) and marketing material (37%); explanatory financial work sits near 15%, with 18.5% overall. The tasks that repeat cluster in writing and communication work.
The report describes changes in task use: some employees in this sample used AI for writing and communication work outside their usual roles. It does not directly measure output quality, and repeated use alone does not establish how jobs should be redesigned.
