A record made at capture

Apple’s September 9 announcement describes an optional Reference mode on iPhone 18 Pro models. The Main camera records signed sensor data; Private Cloud Compute turns it into a reference image. Apple likens this unalterable record to a digital negative.

Compare the photograph with later edits

Photos shows the reference beside the editable main image, allowing users to compare versions. ITHome’s September 10 report also describes the two files coexisting. The value is a visible comparison with a capture baseline.

Apple provides APIs for third-party viewing on iOS, iPadOS and macOS 27. The announcement does not list apps that have adopted them.

Different launch conditions in China and the EU

Apple’s footnote says the feature is unavailable in China at launch because of regulatory requirements. EU users cannot capture reference images on iPhone 18 Pro models at launch, but can develop and view them on iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27. Future availability is not established.

The feature depends on a corresponding capture record; it cannot recover a digital negative for any arbitrary online image. This account draws on the announcement and original report, without a device or cross-platform sharing test.
