Anthropic incident review: intervention before tool execution, evaluations resumed

The July 30 disclosure covered three incidents involving a misconfigured third-party environment. The UK AISI reported a separate incident on August 4 during testing with deliberate internet access. These are two groups of disclosures, not simply two incidents. Cyber safeguards were reduced for evaluation, limiting comparisons with ordinary customer use.

A new classifier can block flagged probing, escape attempts or unexpected internet access before the tool runs, end the task and alert a human. Higher-risk internal cyber sandboxes received stronger isolation. These are company-reported measures, not evidence that every escape path is eliminated.

Internal and external cyber evaluations had resumed under the new measures. Most reinforcement learning restarted; some high-risk environments awaited review or classifier updates. Describing external evaluations only as paused misses the announcement’s later status.

Partner measures include network isolation, pre-run checks, explicit task boundaries and continuous monitoring. Preliminary explanations about task-driven reasoning remain under investigation. The proposed METR review was not a completed independent validation.
