MetaRoCE: a clean-sheet RDMA transport for AI-scale Ethernet, spec open-sourced

Meta designed MetaRoCE, a clean-sheet RDMA transport for AI workloads on commodity Ethernet: congestion control and path selection move to the endpoints, with native out-of-order delivery, multipath, and lossy-Ethernet tolerance without PFC, claimed to hold throughput and tail latency at million-GPU scale. The spec, a reference implementation, and a compliance test suite are released through the Open Compute Project.

Why it is worth understanding

Networking is now a visible bottleneck for large-scale training; an open, PFC-free spec gives self-built training and inference clusters a new baseline to compare against.

Conditions and limitations

Performance claims all come from Meta's own blog and clusters — not proof from independent re-tests; engineering.fb.com is restricted in mainland China, so the AIHOT Chinese digest is attached as a reachable reading path. Real cross-vendor compatibility still awaits OCP-ecosystem validation.
